Production engineering, also known as manufacturing engineering, is the design, development, implementation, operation, maintenance, and control of all processes in the manufacture of a product. Within this context a ‘product’ is defined as an item that has value added to it during the production process. Value is added by means of processes such as forming, machining, joining, and assembly.
Production engineering encompasses the application of castings, machining processing, joining processes, metal cutting & tool design, metrology, machine tools,machining systems, automation, jigs and fixtures, die and mould design, material science, design of automobile parts, and machine designing and manufacturing. Production engineering also overlaps substantially with manufacturing engineeringand industrial engineering. The names are often interchangeable.
In industry, once the design is realized, production engineering concepts regarding work-study, ergonomics, operation research, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning, etc., play important roles in efficient production processes. These deal with integrated design and efficient planning of the entire manufacturing system, which is becoming increasingly complex with the emergence of sophisticated production methods and control systems.
The production engineer possesses a wide set of skills, competences and attitudes based on market and scientific knowledge. These abilities are fundamental for the performance of coordinating and integrating professionals of multidisciplinary teams.
When taking on a project, production engineers first study a company’s current production processes. The main goal of production engineers is to make the manufacturing and production processes as efficient as possible and eliminate waste where necessary. Creating production schedules for orders and ensuring each project stays on track is one of their major responsibilities.
Process engineers use chemistry and physics to develop and produce the industrial processes for making fuel, medicine, and other consumer goods. They work on a team comprised of technicians, and process engineers are responsible for organizing the flow of work through the manufacturing process. Producing documents that outline clear instructions on how to replicate the production of these materials is a key responsibility for those in this career.
